Basic SaSang Theory divides humanity into 4 distinct types, Tae Yang In, So Yang In, Tae Um In and So Um In. The following descriptions are general characteristics. There are differences within each type and one person may exhibit the characteristics or disposition of another. While much insight and information can be gleaned from these descriptions, only a true expert of Constitutional Pulse Diagnosis like Dr. JiMong can diagnose a SaSang Body Type for sure.

Tae Yang In

Typically Tae Yang In have a large, square head, strong square jaw and a thick neck. Their legs and lower body are weaker than their upper body. Tae Yang In are very aggressive and quick to anger. They generally feel strong and are healthy; however they need to urinate frequently. Any problem in the urogential system means big problems overall. Tae Yang In represent approximately less than 1% of the total population in the U.S.A. A famous Tae Yang In would be Albert Einstein.

So Yang In

So Yang In have strong, large shoulders and chest, while their legs and hips are smaller and weaker. The eyes of a So Yang In are sharp looking and they are fast in general. So Yang In tend to do jobs and activities for others more than for themselves. They usually have a lot of smart ideas and are quick to act or react. A So Yang In must have regular bowel movements; constipation means they are getting sick. So Yang’s like to see new colors and often get into trouble from their wandering eyes. In the U.S.A. So Yang In make up approximately 55% of the population. Two famous So Yang In are Bill Clinton and Bruce Lee.

So Um In are well organized and perfectionists but may not accomplish all of their goals due to their attention to detail. Digestion is the problem area for So Um In and if they are having digestion problems, it means their health condition is out of balance. In the U.S.A. So Um In make up approximately 10% of the population.

This is a very basic introduction to some of the body characteristics to be found in SaSang Constitution. Remember that physical shape and personality tendencies are not a guarantee of a body character. A small, slender person could be So Um, So Yang or Tae Um. Thick and strong people could be So Yang or Tae Yang instead of Tae Um. So, now that you know what Constitutional Body Character you are and you have an idea about which foods are best for your particular Body Constitution; you may have some questions. For your benefit, Dr. JiMong has addressed the most common questions acupuncture and concerns below.

What about fruits and vegetables? I thought it was always good to eat fruits and vegetables?

All fruits and vegetables do have benefits. Enjoy a full variety of fruits and vegetables; however eat less of those that are not for your character. If you are a So Um In, don’t eat 3 bananas a day; share one with your spouse. If you are a So Yang In, savor 1 ear of corn on the cob instead of 4. It really is about monitoring and controlling what and how much you eat than avoidance or over-indulgence. Simply put, eat more of your body character’s food and less of others.

If I am a So Yang In and I eat So Um In food, or if I am a Tae Yang In and eat Tae Um In food, what happens?

Well, first, it is not poison, you won’t keel over or turn purple. The secret is to just eat a little. Eat the opposite body character food less frequently and in smaller portions. If you are a So Yang In and grilled chicken is served, don’t eat 2 breasts, a wing and leg. Have a leg and eat more vegetables, too much cock-a-doodle-doo is not good for you. If you control portion size and frequency then you’re not harming yourself and there is no damage done. If you over indulge in the opposite body character’s food, you can expect to gain weight, have indigestion and trouble digesting. Eventually, over eating the wrong body character food can slow your healing and recovery time.

Does this mean the family cook has to make a meal for every different Body Constitution?

No. First, the Body Character is genetic. Children will have the Body Character of one of the parents. In most family situations, this automatically limits the number of types to 2, not all 4. If everyone in your family is the same Constitutional Body Character, congratulations! If not, then make the main dish for one type and the side dishes of the other. Ok, I know what your thinking, “My family is large and diverse, my in-laws, and oh my gosh! What about the holidays!?!” Don’t worry, just Listen To Me please. In situations like this, where there may be 3 or 4 different Constitutions present for dinner, cook general food. Yes, it’s that simple. Cook a variety, let COLOR be your guide. A mix of colors usually means a nice mix of food choices. Plus, you will still be getting the vitamin and mineral benefit of what you eat. The So Um’s and Tae Um’s can add spices and hot sauce, the So Yang’s and Tae Yang’s can keep it cool. Everybody’s happy and well fed.

Ok, Dr. JiMong, I see what you’re saying, but I’m a Tae Um In and I’m going to eat steak EVERY night, maybe steak and eggs for breakfast too! Isn’t that the best?

Hold on, I appreciate your enthusiasm; however, you have to approach your menu in the same regard to other areas of your life. You have to have Philosophical Constitutional Common Sense. You are what you eat; you don’t want to be a moo-cow! In ALL areas of your life you should practice moderation. Don’t go to extremes. Eat a sensible variety. Not too much, not the same thing all the time. Eat as it is beneficial to live; slowly, with a happy mind. You will feel the benefits, and be around to share this wisdom with your grandchildren.

Enjoy your meal!
