Acupuncture and Hypertension
Hypertension is characterized by high blood pressure. About 75 million people in the United States above the age of 20 have high blood pressure; that’s one in three adults. It is estimated that hypertension killed 56,561 people in the US in 2006. High blood pressure means that the pressure caused by blood flowing through the arteries is higher than it should be, causing unnecessary stress on the arteries. Hypertension has been nicknamed “the silent killer” because it doesn’t really have a specific cause with noticeable symptoms, and 90% of the cases of hypertension are not caused by an underlying disease.
In Oriental Medicine various relationships exist between the different organs in the body, and the function of each organ is interconnected to the function of the other organs. Hypertension is the result of a disharmonious relationship between the organs in the body creating an unbalance. This unbalance will result in the high blood pressure because the blood and energy in the body cannot flow properly. Acupuncture is fantastic at helping to treat Hypertension because it balances the blood flow and energy flow between the organs stopping the cause for high blood pressure instead of just lowering the blood pressure numbers.
